The 1871-S is among the more available Type Two double eagles in circulated grades. It is scarce in Uncirculated and most of the surviving Mint State coins are in the MS60 to MS61 range. The 1871-S becomes very scarce in MS62 and it is quite rare above this. For many advanced specialists, MS61 is the “sweet spot” for this date as an MS62, if available, will cost in the $11,000-13,000 range.
This is an extremely high end coin for the grade with strong claims to an MS62. It is very lustrous and very clean with far fewer marks than usual for the date and grade. The luster is full and frosty while the light rose and orange-gold color is “right” for the date. Most 1871-S double eagles have poor eye appeal and heavy abrasions but this piece is really attractive.
The last APR for an NGC MS61 1871-S double eagle is Heritage 10/12: 6215 at $7,050. That coin was not CAC approved and was clearly inferior to the piece offered here.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with just two finer (both MS62).
