Small Date variety.
This is the more common of the two varieties known for this issue. The Small Date is reasonably available in EF40-AU50 grades but it becomes scarce in the mid-to-high AU range and it is rare in Uncirculated.
This coin is sourced from Europe and it has a nice orange-gold “Euro” appearance with some contrasting deeper hues on the highlights. There is a good deal of luster remaining and an AU55 grade would not be out of the question were it not for some small ticks on both sides.
The only AU53 1854 Small Date $20 to sell at auction in 2012 was Heritage 7/12: 5073, approved by CAC and a virtual twin to the example offered here, which brought $2,990.
It is getting harder and harder to find nice Type One double eagles of this quality, especially at this low price point.
CAC has approved three examples in this grade with 14 finer.
