A total of 9,925 eagles were made at the Carson City mint in 1884, and these were the last ten dollar gold pieces made at this facility until coinage of this denomination resumed in 1890. The 1884-CC is a moderately scarce date in the medium AU grades which becomes rare in properly graded AU58, and extremely rare in Uncirculated.
This well-struck, frosty example shows nice natural light orange-gold hues and there are fewer marks than normal on the surfaces. What appear to be scratches on the neck of Liberty are mint-made and these are seen on all 1884-CC eagles.
No PCGS AU53 example has sold at auction since January 2011. The last NGC AU53, a non-CAC piece, realized $4,847 as Heritage 4/14: 6646.
Nice Carson City eagles are currently in strong demand and this is one of the better 1884-CC’s which I have offered in some time.
CAC has approved two in this grade with nine finer.
