The 1869 gold dollar is scarcer than its mintage of 5,900 business strikes would suggest. There are a few hundred known and most are seen in the AU and lower Mint State grades. Gems are quite rare. The finest known is a PCGS MS68 that brought $25,300 back in October 2004 as Lot 597 in a Bowers and Merena auction.
This Gem is mostly prooflike with rich orange-gold color on the obverse and reverse. A few small marks can be seen with magnification on the obverse; the reverse is very clean.
There hasn’t been an MS65 example of this date that has sold at auction since Heritage 5/07: 3285 that realized $4,255. Since 1994, only four MS65 coins, all graded by PCGS, have sold.
