The 1860-S is the most available of the five Type Three gold dollars produced at this mint yet it is still scarce in Uncirculated. There are an estimated 15-18 in this range with most grading MS60 to MS62.
This satiny example is characterized by rich natural yellow-gold toning with a small red copper spot over the M in AMERICA. The strike is sharp with very bold detail at the centers while the surfaces lack all but the slightest scuffs, most of which are limited to the left obverse field.
Only one PCGS MS62 1860-S gold dollar has been sold at auction since 2009 and it realized $3,878 as Goldberg 6/14: 1665.
Excellent value at less than $4,000 and a really first-rate example of this scarce Western gold dollar.
