The 1853-C is a scarcer than the 1851-C and comparable to the 1852-C. It is generally seen in EF45 to AU55 grades but often has planchet issues and unoriginal surfaces.
This choice green-gold example is well struck on a high quality planchet. It shows light wear which is focused on the high spots and the surfaces are free of all but the most minor abrasions.
Only three PCGS AU53 examples have sold at auction since February 2003 and the last off these, ex Heritage 3/08: 1340, brought $2,300.
