The four Carson City half eagles from the 1890′s are all available in the lower Uncirculated grades and this makes them very popular with date and type collectors. The 1890-CC is far scarcer than the generic 1891-CC and it is not often seen much better than in the MS61 to MS62 range.
This well struck, frosty example is pleasing for the date and grade with good luster, sharp details and no marks of consequence.
Heritage 9/13: 5203, approved by CAC and graded MS61 by NGC, sold for $2,174. A non-CAC PCGS MS61 brought $2,350 as Heritage 3/13: 4252.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with 25 finer.
