The 1879-S half eagle is moderately scarce in MS62 to MS63, very rare in MS64 and extremely rare in Gem.
This example has the naked-eye appearance of an MS64 and its bright, frosty surfaces show just a few hairlines in the left obverse field. In my opinion, this coin would likely upgrade if regarded enough times.
A PCGS MS62+ example with CAC approval last sold for $1,351 as Heritage 1/14: 10092; the same coin earlier sold for $1,495 as Heritage 7/12: 4903.
CAC has approved seven in MS62 with five finer; as far as I can tell only graded MS62+ have been stickered by this service.
