Until the discovery of the S.S. Republic, high grade examples of this date were all but unknown. Today, some wonderful, high grade 1865-P double eagles exist and unlike many other dates (from other wrecks), these 1865′s have a “look” which doesn’t scream “seawater.”
This example is not listed as being from the S.S. Republic but it almost certainly is. It is sharply detailed with appealing frosty surfaces which show just a few small marks. The color is a nice light to medium rose and yellow-gold and the overall eye appeal is excellent as are all of these higher grade 1865-P double eagles.
There have been eight MS63′s sold at auction since the middle of 2010 but every single one has been in an NGC holder and only a few have CAC approval. The prices for these have ranged from a low of $15,653 to a high of $20,100. In the Heritage 4/13 sale, a PCGS MS65 brought an impressive $88,125.
If you collect Type One double eagles or if you specialize in Civil War gold, this piece will form an important part of your set.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with 14 finer.
