POPULAR CIVIL WAR ISSUE 1861 HALF EAGLE; PCGS MS61
By a large margin, the 1861 is the most available Civil War half eagle. And, it is the only Civil War half eagle which most collectors can hope to find in high grades. It is slightly scarce in MS61 to MS62 but it is not often seen with natural color and choice surfaces.
This fresh-to-the-market example comes from a European source and it is characterized by very attractive deep, natural green-gold and rose-tinged orange-gold. The surfaces are clean and choice for the grade and I have seen worse 1861 half eagles in MS62 holders.
The last PCGS MS61 example of this date to sell at auction brought $2,115 as Heritage 7/16: 4466.
