SCARCE PCGS/CAC MS61 1857 HALF EAGLE
This is a common date in circulated grades which becomes scarce in the MS60 to MS62 range and very rare choicer than this. Most of the 30-40 known in Uncirculated have been dipped and pieces with natural color are rare.
This well struck, frosty example would likely grade MS62 if not for some scuffs in the upper left obverse field. It has never been brightened and shows nice natural rose and medium orange-gold color on both sides.
Only five PCGS MS61 1857 half eagles have sold at auction since 2011 and none have been CAC approved.
As with many of the P mint half eagles of this era, a nice Uncirculated 1857 with all the bells and whistles for less than two grand seems like especially good value to me.
CAC has approved just five in this grade with two finer.
