Coin Description

RARE SHARP MINTMARK 1854-C HALF EAGLE GRADED AU 58 BY PCGS

Variety 1, strong C.

The population data for this date is extremely misleading as many of the higher graded examples are Variety 2 with weak or virtually non-existent mintmarks. The 1854-C is rare with a sharp C, especially in AU55 and above. In fact, if you were to properly designate this date the number of choice 1854-C half eagles with strong mintmarks might not even number 10-12 coins.

This lightly worn example show little evidence of circulation but there is some rub on the high spots. The surfaces are mostly free of marks and display attractive natural medium yellow-gold color which is right for the date. I have only seen a few 1854-C half eagles with sharp mintmarks which were finer than this coin.

Only two 1854-C half eagles in PCGS AU58 have sold at auction since the beginning of 2012 and one of them had a weak mintmark.

This date should sell for at least a 2x premium over the common 1852-C and 1853-C dates and the savvy specialist will no doubt recognize the importance of this offering.
