The 1850-D is one of the scarcest half eagles from this mint. It is seen most often in the EF40 to AU50 range and properly graded AU55 and finer examples are extremely scarce.
This medium green-gold piece is one of the few 1850-D half eagles that I have seen which hasn't been scrubbed repeatedly. It has some remaining luster and there is dirt in the recesses on the reverse. As on all 1850-D half eagles, this piece shows some weakness on the mintmark but the "D" is fully visible.
The last NGC AU55 which sold at auction for $4,406 as Heritage 9/13: 6774 and it was a scrubbed piece which, in my opinion, was not nearly as nice as the current example.
