SCARCE 1846-D NORMAL MINTMARK HALF EAGLE GRADED AU53 BY PCGS
Variety 15-H.
While its counterpart the 1846-D/D is more attention-grabbing, the 1846-D Normal Mintmark is the rarer of these two issues. It is not often seen choicer than AU53 to AU55 and seldom with natural color and choice surfaces.
This lustrous, lightly worn example has a good deal of natural russet color with some deeper hues and dirt in the border recesses. The surfaces show light marks consistent to the grade but nothing deep or detracting. For the issue, this piece has very good overall eye appeal.
The last PCGS AU53 example of this variety to sell at auction realized $4,169 as Heritage 10/11: 4904.
A hard issue to find in higher grades than this.
