POPULAR 1839-C HALF EAGLE
Variety 1, die state 1.
The 1839-C half eagle is numismatically significant as a one-year type. It features the first Liberty Head design with the mintmark on the obverse. In 1840, the half eagle design was modified and the mintmark was moved to the reverse. This is a date with multiple levels of demand and nice collector grade examples are popular.
This medium green-gold example is one of the few mid-grade 1839-C half eagles that I have seen which is not stripped of its natural color. The surfaces show light marks consistent with the grade while the strike is typical for the issue with some flatness seen on the radial lines in the stars. The overall eye appeal is far above-average.
No PCGS EF40 1839-C half eagle has been sold at auction since Stacks 5/09: 5883 which realized $3,450.
This is likely the only nice 1839-C half eagle available for sale which is priced at less than $5,000 .
