Coin Description

RARE UNCIRCULATED 1846-O QUARTER EAGLE

The 1846-O quarter eagle is common in circulated grades but it is rare in Uncirculated with an estimated 15-20 known, mostly in the MS60 to MS62 range. Many of the Uncirculated pieces I have seen are either very bright or they show pancake strikes with considerable flatness at the centers.

This piece is uncommonly well struck on the obverse with a sharp center and border; the reverse is slightly weak on the right leg and inner wing. Both sides show a glowing orange-gold hue which is a bit deeper on the obverse. The surfaces are choice save for a thin old hairline on the reverse from the first S in STATES down to the eagle’s neck.

Only two PCGS MS61 1846-O quarter eagles have sold at auction since late 209. One brought $5,640 as Goldberg 6/15: 1692 while the other realized $5,581 as Heritage 10/12: 5354.

This date is almost never available in grades higher than MS61 to MS62.
