NICE UNCIRCULATED 1837 QUARTER EAGLE, NGC/CAC MS62
Variety 16.
The 1837 is the second scarcest Philadelphia Classic Head quarter eagle, after the 1839. It is common in circulated grades but scarce in Uncirculated with most seen in the MS60 to MS61 range. Properly graded MS62 pieces are very scarce and this date is rare and undervalued in MS63 and finer.
This fresh to the market example has not been available to collectors for many years and it is vibrant and original with great luster and pleasing medium golden coloration. The strike is typically soft at the centers while the borders are sharp. The surfaces show some light scuffs and there is a small mint-made area of roughness at the outside points of stars eleven and twelve. This is the single nicest 1837 quarter eagle I have offered in the last three years.
No CAC approved MS62 1837 quarter eagle has ever sold at auction. The last MS62 to cross the block was Heritage 12/15: 3301, encapsulated by NGC, which sold for $4,823. Only three MS62's in total have sold since early 2009.
This is the finest available quality at less than $10,000 and it would make a great addition to a date set of Classic Head quarter eagles.
CAC has approved 23 in this grade and only 2 finer.
