CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS AU58 1880-CC HALF EAGLE

Variety 1-A.

Of the five CC half eagles produced in the 1880's, the 1880-CC is the second most available after the 1882-CC. It becomes scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is a rare, expensive issue in Uncirculated which represents an overbuy for most collectors.

This fresh-to-the-market example is a frosty slider with the appearance of an MS61. It is well detailed with none of the typical central weakness and both sides show wear which is limited to the high spots. The color is a rich natural golden-orange and the surfaces show just a few shallow, non-detracting marks.

The only PCGS AU58 1880-CC half eagle to sell at auction since the Summer of 2014 brought $6,463 as Heritage 4/16: 5837.

If one were available, a PCGS MS61 1880-CC half eagle would cost in excess of $12,500, making this nice AU58 a good value at around half the price.
