UNDERVALUED 1848 QUARTER EAGLE

Only 6,500 business strike 1848 quarter eagles were struck and it is likely that as few as 100 survive, mostly in the EF40 to AU53 range. This date is about as scarce as the famous 1848 CAL quarter eagle but it is priced at just a fraction of its famous counterpart.

This well-detailed example shows a good deal of luster for the assigned grade beneath a nice golden-orange overtone. This date is typically seen with severe abrasions and while this coin has a few scattered ticks, it is clearly choice for the grade.

Only two PCGS AU50 1848 quarter eagles have crossed the auction block since 2007. A low end example sold for $1,998 in July 2016 while a much nicer piece with excellent color realized $2,585.

If P mint quarter eagles were as popular as their Southern counterparts, this would be a $3500 coin.
