Variety 38-DD, Medium D mintmark. The more available of the two varieties for this issue.

While not widely known, the 1855-D is the third scarcest half eagle from the Dahlonega mint after the 1861-D and the 1842-D Large Date and it is the fourth scarcest in high grades. The 1855-D is scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55, rare in AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated.

This bright lustrous orange-gold example would grade AU55 were it not for a contact mark on the reverse below ST in STATES. There is more than enough luster and detail to suggest a higher grade and the obverse is choice. For the issue, the level of eye appeal is above average.

The last PCGS AU53 1855-D half eagle to sell at auction was offered in February 2008 (where it sold for $3,450) and only one other has been sold since October 2004.

This date is missing from many specialized collections of Dahlonega half eagles.
