RARE CHOICE AU 1865 THREE DOLLAR WITH CAC APPROVAL

Only 1,140 examples of this date were struck for circulation and the 1865 is among the rarest collectible issues of this design from the Philadelphia mint. It is closest in rarity to the 1877 but the 1865 has the added cachet of being a Civil War issue. It is not often seen in the higher circulated grades and most survivors in the AU55 to AU58 range have either been dipped or show questionable color.

This is one of the few circulated 1865 Threes I have seen with natural, unadulterated color. This piece is lustrous and in possession of nice russet hues on both sides. The obverse is mostly free of marks; the reverse shows a small reeding mark between the date and LL in DOLLARS and there is a small deposit of residue at the final S in DOLLARS. For the issue, the eye appeal is far above average.

The only PCGS AU55 1865 Three Dollar to sell at auction since July 2012 brought $8,813 as Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14085. The last PCGS AU55 with CAC approval sold for $9,775 as Heritage 1/12: 6281.

This a really nice coin which is perfect for the Civil War specialist or the general collector who appreciates numismatically desirable

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 7 higher.
