In grades up through MS64, the 1887-S half eagle is a very common date. Gems, however, are very rare as the current PCGS population of just three in MS65+ and a single coin better (an MS66).
This is a frosty Gem with lovely original medium orange-gold color over unmarked, frosty surfaces.
There are APRs for this date at $19,200 (Heritage 2024 ANA; 4325) and for $26,400 (Stack’s Bowers 2021 ANA: 4212).
CAC has approved three in MS65+ with just one coin finer (MS66).
