RARE NGC/CAC MS61 1866 WITH MOTTO $5, THE SINGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Fewer than 100 examples of this numismatically significant issue exist from an original mintage of 6,700 business strikes. I believe that there are around four or five Unciruclated examples currently known.

This is a properly graded example with nice medium orange-gold color over lightly marked surfaces.

The single highest graded, ex Heritage 9/2008: 3716 that was unsold with a $40k+ reserve, has not been sen in over a decade. The next best is a PCGSMS62 that brought $25,300 as Goldberg 5/2008: 4679. There was just a single Uncirculated1866 $5 in Fairmont and it was a non-CAC PCGS 61 that realized $15,600 as Stacks Bowers 4/2022: 5114.

No CAC approved MS61 example has ever sold at auction.

While the quality of this coin speaks for itself, the fact that it is the only 1866 $5 in MS61 approved by CAC with none finer makes it a singly desirable coin!
