1805 $5, PCGS MS64 ex Bass Collection
BD-3 (R-4). Wide date.
Viewed as a date, the 1805 is a scarcer issue in this series in MS64, and it remains really rare as a Gem. In all my years of specializing in early gold, the sole MS65 that I’ve seen was the superb Madison coin which sold for a record $195,500…all the way back in 2008.
This coin is most notable for its superb reddish-gold color which covers both sides. The strike is very sharp and the underlying frosty luster is bold. A small disturbance is seen in the left obverse field that appears to have occurred after the coin was made.
The collector who consigned this coin to me has a “CAC or Nothing” coin mentality, and while I can’t fault him for this, it sometimes leads to a decision such as this when he is bailing on a coin that is pretty special in my opinion.
An outstanding Capped Bust Right half eagle destined for a great type set.
Ex Heritage 2023 FUN: 9031 where my consignor purchased it for $52,800, Harry Bass.
