CONDITION CENSUS 1857 $5 PCGS/CAC MS63

In all circulated grades, the 1857 is a common date in the No Motto Liberty half eagle series. It is scarce in properly graded MS62, rare in full MS63, and very rare any finer. There are two known in PCGS MS64+ and none finer.

This frosty medium yellow-gold example is comfortably in the Condition Census for the issue. It has good luster and a totally natural look.

This exact coin (see below) is the sole PCGS/CAC 1857 $5 to ever sell at auction.

In my opinion, choice No Motto half eagles from Philadelphia represent possibly the single best deal in pre-1933 US gold.

CAC has approved this one coin in MS63 with one finer (MS64+).

Ex Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5084, where it sold for $14,400.
