RARE FRESH-TO-THE-MARKET 1843-C $5 IN PCGS MS61
The 1840-1843 Charlotte half eagles have a Small Letters reverse and are distinctly different than all the half eagles from this facility beginning in 1844, which show a Large Letters reverse. This means that there are just five issues that have the Small Letters reverse, with three of these being very rare to extremely rare in Uncirculated (1840-C, 1841-C and 1842-C Small Date), and the other two—1842-C Large Date and 1843-C—being rare to very rare.
This coin was purchased from a long-time collector/dealer who is known among a select few dealers as a connoisseur of fine, high-grade gold and silver pieces. I was pleased to purchase this coin from him as well as a choice AU55/PCGS 1840-D quarter eagle that I recently sold. It is very frosty and shows enticing wholly natural medium to deep orange-gold color which is slightly more intense on the obverse than on the reverse. The surfaces show undisturbed frost and the overall appearance is excellent.
Few dealers are as gung-ho towards CAC as I am, but this coin shows my increasing frustration with the stickering side of CAC. This piece is, in my opinion, outstanding for the grade and it blows the doors off of the PCGS/CAC MS61 ex Fairmont coin that sold for $20,400 as Heritage 2025 FUN: 5565 and earlier for $24,000 as Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5028. But because of the fact that it isn’t CAC stickered, at least half if not three-quarters of the potential buyers of this coin are going to shy away and wait for one which is CAC stickered. And I totally understand it if you are one of these collectors. I’m just saying buy the coin not the holder. Rant over.
PCGS shows a population of six in MS61 with 10 finer. I know for certain that these numbers are inflated by resubmissions, and the total number of unique coins is likely in the range of six to nine coins total in all Uncirculated grades.
This is an essential coin for the date collector of Charlotte fives or for the seven-mint set specialist.
