RARE PCGS/CAC EF45 1862-S HALF EAGLE, ex Fairmont
In my experience, the 1862-S is the third rarest San Francisco half eagle, trailing only the exceedingly rare 1854-S and the rare 1864-S. An estimated 55 to 65 exist with many in the VG to VF range. If you check the PCGS populations for this issue you will note that 11 have been graded in EF45 and another 8 in AU50. These figures are inflated by resubmissions, and most of the actual coins in 45 and 50 holders are pretty sucky. I am personally aware of just three of four coins in the 45 to 55 range which I would stock for inventory, of which this is—obviously—one of them.
In my opinion, this coin is a no-brainer AU50 as it shows way more luster than an EF45 should. In addition, there is more than enough wingtip detail to support my contention. I compared my coin to the PCGS AU53, also ex Fairmont, that brought $20,400 as Stack’s 2022 ANA: 3092, and I feel that mine is at least its equal, and it clearly is more original—and less intensely toned.
Prior to this coin’s auction appearance in the April 2022 Stack’s Bowers sale, the most recent offering of a PCGS EF45 1862-S half eagle occurred all the way back in March, 2004.
An important coin for the Civil War gold specialist or the collector grappling with a challenging S mint half eagle project.
Ex Stack’s 2026 ANA: 2345 at $21,950; earlier Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 3092 at $25,200.
CAC has approved five in this grade with zero finer.
