ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING PCGS/CAC MS62+ 1813 HALF EAGLE
I can’t think of another series of pre-1840 US gold coins in which one date—in this case the 1813—constitutes such a great majority of surviving examples. Something on order of 50% of the total number of Uncirculated half eagles dated from 1813 through 1829 bear the 1813 date of issuance. If you factor in all the circulated 1813 half eagles into the equation, the number rises to almost 2/3rds of the total known.
While numerically available in the MS62 to MS63 grade range, this is probably among the top 5% of the pieces currently known. It is one of just three 1813 half eagles to have been awarded an MS62+ grade, and I will put my coin up against the other two in a game of which coin is nicer anytime you care to challenge me.
What do I like about this coin? What don’t I like about it?
Great color? Check. You’ll love the coin in person as the images can’t quite capture the sophisticated orange-gold overtones atop deep green undertone.
Sharp strike? Careful handling the coin, Tiger…that there half eagle is sharp.
Complete originality? This coin could be the freshest most original example of this date and looking at my database, I have sold 62 different 1813 half eagles over last decade-and-a-half; an average of around four per year.
You can spend $17,500 on a scuffy, commercial quality, or you can spend $32,500 on this special example. It’s your call.
