Varieties of the 1808 $5 exist with an overdate and the more available normal date. The Normal Date is more available, but I have always felt that this issue was quite scarce in MS63 to MS64 and exceedingly rare in Gem. It should sell for a 5-10% premium over the more common 1807, 1809, and 1811 issues; especially when it comes as nice as this piece.
Were this coin not in an OGH holder, I would have 100% definitely cracked it and resubmitted it to PCGS as it is—in my opinion, anyway—a strong candidate to upgrade to MS63+. It has glowing completely natural golden-yellow color over undisturbed frosty surfaces. There are some noticeable mint-made clashes at the central obverse as well as the upper left center of the reverse. The eye appeal is extremely high for an MS63 Capped Bust Left half eagle and I’ve seen a number of inferior examples of this design type in MS64 holders.
With only two Gems graded by PCGS (one sold for $138k in 2011 and it was not approved by CAC) and with a more recent APR of $70,800 for a PCGS/CAC MS64+ in late 2022, this is possibly the single best example of an 1808 half eagle available to collectors at a price point lower than $50,000.
CAC has approved five in MS63 with just five finer.
