GEM PROOF 1885 $3.00, PCGS PR65 WITH CAC APPROVAL
A total of 109 Proofs were struck and an estimated 50-60 are known today. Gems are among the most frequently seen issues of this denomination but no Three Dollar can rightfully be called “common” in Gem Proof.
This example is housed in an older Generation 4.0 holder which means that it was graded between late 1998 and early 2002. This was before PCGS designated Proof gold coins as Cameo or Deep Cameo, and this example is clearly a full Cameo. Rich orange-gold color covers bright, highly reflective mirror fields and with the exception of a small contact mark in the field beneath the chin of the Indian, the surfaces are virtually untouched.
There have been just two APRs for this date in PCGS/CAC PR65. One was in May, 2017 and it brought $30,550, while the other is this exact coin (see below).
This coin has wonderful eye appeal and it would be an excellent choice for a type set or a Box of 20.
With no designation, CAC has approved a single PR65 and another coin in PR66. In PR65CAM, they have approved seven in PR65 with eight finer. In PR65DCAM, just a single coin has been approved which is graded PR66. In all, 28 proofs have been approved.
Ex Heritage 4/2021: 5112 where it sold for $48,000.
