ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1865 GOLD DOLLARS IN COPPER
Judd-438 (R-7). Regular dies trial piece in copper with a Reeded Edge.
This issue—along with the other gold denominations of this year—are believed to be struck for collectors and they were available in complete sets of six coins(gold dollars through double eagles) which could be purchased through the mint.
I know of just a single example of J-438 that has been designated by PCGS as ‘Red.’ It was last sold as Heritage 4/2016: 5613, and it had obverse spots as well as a gigantic and highly detracting reverse fingerprint.
I love the concept of adding a few relevant patterns to your gold coin set(s) especially when they are very rare and very affordable…just like this pop 1/0 1865 Proof gold dollar.
Ex Simpson Collection.
