VERY RARE AND MUCH UNDERRATED PCGS/CAC PR64CAM 1879 GOLD DOLLAR
Only 30 Proof gold dollars were made in 1879, and I believe that around half of these survive. Gems are very rare with just three or four known, the best of which are single examples in PR66+ DCAM and PR67 DCAM.
This borderline Gem has an appealing black and white appearance, while the frosted devices show stark contrast to the reflective fields. A few light lines are seen in the left obverse field and these are consistent with the assigned grade.
Since early 2012, just a single PCGS PR64 1879 gold dollar has sold at auction and it brought $16,800 as Stack’s Bowers 4/2025: 3109; it was not approved by CAC. In their 4/2024 sale, Stack’s Bowers got a winning bid of $18,000 for a PR64DCAM, also without a CAC sticker.
This is just about the single rarest Proof gold coin that can be located for less than $20,000.
The CAC population for PR64CAM gold dollars is two in this grade and just one finer.
