PCGS/CAC MS62+ 1859 THREE DOLLARS
In PCGS MS62 to MS63, the 1859 $3.00 isn’t really ‘scarce” but locating nice CAC-quality pieces is challenging, and in MS64 and finer, the 1859 $3.00 is rare. The highest graded by PCGS as of late 2025 are three MS66s, none of which have been sold at auction since early 2014.
This piece is, in my opinion, totally deserving of its “+” modifier. Both sides are very well-struck with complete detail in spite of some noticeable central clashmarks which are mint-made and non-invasive. Were it not for a few wispy lines across the obverse, I believe that this attractive coin could likely have graded MS63+ or possibly even MS64.
As this is the sole MS62 example of this date to receive a plus from PCGS, there obviously are no auction price records. Just a single CAC approved PCGS MS62 has sold at auction, and it brought $7,638 as Legend 2/2023: 382.
For most collectors who specialize in this series, this high-end PCGS/CAC MS62+ is more than enough coin for their set.
CAC has approved seven in MS62 (including this one coin in MS62+) with 16 finer.
