THE SINGLE HGIHEST GRADED 1881 PROOF GOLD DOLLAR WITH CAMEO CONTRAST
Only 87 were struck, and a considerably scarcer coin than any of the remaining Proof gold dollars coined during the 1880s.
This is a fully original Gem with rich natural yellow-gold color. It is among the few examples of this date that I have seen which hasn’t been dipped. A few light lines in the let obverse field appear to have been in the planchet prior to the coin being struck.
No PCGS PR65CAM 1881 gold dollar has been sold at auction for over 30 years. There is an APR of $28,800 for a nice PCGS PR66DAM from 11/2024.
CAC shows a population of 1/0 in PR65CAM and two in PR65DCAM with eight finer (all in PR66 DCAM).
