AMONG THE FINEST KNOWN PROOF 1883 GOLD DOLLARS

Mintages climbed to 207 Proof gold dollars in 1883, but many were not carefully handled and, as a result, are hairlined. And unlike the 1885-1889 issues, this date is very difficult to locate with strong cameo contrast.

This is the sole 1883 gold dollar to have been approved by CAC in PR65DCAM with one finer (a remarkable CACG PR67+). It is an outstanding Gem with natural dusky orange-gold color over deep, reflective mirror fields. A touch of natural filminess is seen at the left obverse and this stands as a hallmark of an undipped proof of this era.

In October 2016, a PCGS PR66 CAM example of this date sold for $15,275. No CAC approved PCGS Gem 1883 gold dollar designated as DCAM has ever sold at auction.

This seems like really good value for the series; a comment not often heard when discussing Proof gold of any denomination.

CAC has approved just four 1883 gold dollars as DCAM with two in PR65DCAM and none finer.

CACG has graded one in PR67+ DCAM with none finer.
