OUTSTANDING PCGS/CAC AU55 1854-D THREE DOLLAR
The 1854-D $3.00 is arguably the single most popular coin produced at the Dahlonega mint. Just 1,120 were struck, and it is notable for its status as a one-year type. Nice AU coins are scarce and always in demand, while Uncirculated 1854-D Threes are extremely rare and very costly.
This is an outstanding coin for the date and grade. The medium green-gold and russet coloration is completely original while the surfaces are lustrous and very clean. The strike is well above-average with nearly complete denticles on the obverse; fewer than 10% of the 1854-D $3s I am aware of show this fullness of strike.
In their 2022 Summer ANA sale, Stack’s Bowers set a record price for an AU55 1854-D $3.00 when they sold a PCGS/CAC example for $132,000. In their 2023 Summer ANA sale, the same firm sold a second PCGS/CAC AU55 for $96,000. This exact coin (see below) brought $78,000 in May, 2025.
An important coin for the advanced collector.
CAC has approved 11 in AU55 with five finer.
Ex Heritage 4/2025: 3279 where it sold for $78,000.
