GEM PCGS/CAC AU58 1838-C $2.50 WITH WONDERFUL COLOR
HM-1, R-4.
As a date, the 1838-C is considerably scarcer than its counterpart, the 1839-C. However, the 1838-C is quite a bit more available in the higher AU grades and in Uncirculated as well. But given the choice between a nice 1838-C and a nice 1839-C, 99% of all collectors will opt for the former due to its status as a first-year-of-issue.
This is one of the two or three best AU58 1838-C quarter eagles I’ve ever offered, and this is saying something as there are very few nice examples of this prized issue that I’ve never bought or sold. The best feature of this particular coin is its original fiery reddish-gold color which is thick on both sides. The underlying surfaces are very clean, and this piece has enough eye appeal to satisfy even the most finicky buyer.
In May 2023, Heritage sold a nice PCGS/CAC AU58 for $32,400, while in September of the same year, the same firm got $33,600 for a PCGS/CAC AU58+.
If you are working on a world-class set of Classic Head quarter eagles or if you specialize in nice Charlotte quarter eagles, you have got to own this exceptional coin.
CAC has approved three in AU58/58+ with just two finer.
