RARE PCGS AU55 1840-D $2.50
While the 1856-D is the rarest Dahlonega quarter eagle in terms of total number known, the 1840-D is unquestionably the rarest issue of this type in higher grades. In fact, I rate it as the single rarest issue of any type struck at this facility.
This coin is fresh to the market and it has never been offered to collectors prior to now. It shows a remarkably strong strike for the issue and this includes the reverse which is sharp despite two massive cracks that intersect in the horizontal lines of the shield. There is a good amount of luster seen below medium green-gold color. Some minor porosity can be seen on the reverse and this is completely mint-made.
Since 1999, there have been a total of just two PCGS AU55 1840-D quarter eagles sold at auction. Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA: 6025 graded AU58 and it brought $45,600. In my opinion, my coin is comparable if not even a bit nicer overall.
An important opportunity for the advanced D mint quarter eagle specialist.
