SCARCE 1842 SMALL DATE $10 IN NGC AU58, ex Granite Lady
Two varieties are known for eagles dated 1842: the Large Date, and the much scarcer Small Date.
This variety uses a date punch also seen on half dimes and it is comically small. It is extremely scarce in AU58 and very rare in Uncirulated.
The surfaces are far less bagmarked than usual for this issue and the color is totally natural with attractive deep russet shades.
It is been years since I offered a finer 1842 Small Date $10 for sale on my website.
Stack’s Bowers 2024 ANA: 5745 was also graded AU58 by NGC, and despite its having CAC approval, it was very low-end as evidenced by its low price realized of $6,600.
