CAC APPROVED PCGS AU55 INVERTED DATE $10, ex Fairmont Hoard
This well-known and undeniably cool variety is the result of the three digit date logotype (186) was punched into the die upside down and then corrected. It is the single most dramatic variety of this entire design type. It is actually less rare than the 1865-S Normal Date, but it sells for a premium due to its unique nature.
This exact coin (see below) is the sole PCGS/CAC AU55 to sell in over two decades. It was offered as Fairmont/“JBS”: 3283 and it brought $39,600 in Stack’s Bowers 8/2022 sale. An incredible PCGS MS64 from the S.S.Central America—that sold for $115,000 back in May 1999—is by far the finest known.
I believe that this coin is the second or third finest known. It shows remarkable originality with rich fiery reddish-orange hues atop lustrous surfaces. A shallow scrape in the left obverse filed removes this lovely coin from strong consideration as an AU58. For this issue, the eye appeal is exceptional.
CAC has approved four in AU55 with none finer.
Ex Fairmont.
