This low-mintage issue—just 7,000 were made—is underrated when compared to the slightly more available San Francisco Civil War issues in this challenging set. Around 40-50 exist and 90% of these grade EF45 and lower. I am aware of just three or four nice AU coins of which this seems to be the second best, topped only by a single CAC approved PCGS AU58 that could possibly be a former PCGSAU55 that was upgraded.
I have never seen or offered for sale a finer example. The color is original while the surfaces are lightly marked. If this were a common date you would grade this AU55 all day and all night; no “rarity pushing up the grade” scenario here.
This is one of the very few Liberty Head eagles that was not included in the Stack’s Bowers 4/2022 “Hendricks” sale which had the best offering of this series since the 2015 Admiral sale.
This is among the best coins I was offered at the recent 2026 ANA show, and DWN is proud to offer the second finest known 1859-S $10.
CAC has approved his one coin with one finer (AU58)
