A CONDITION CENSUS PCGS/CAC AU55 1860-S $10
Only 5,000 eagles dated 1860-S were made and it is tied with the 1876-S for the second lowest production figure for any eagle from this facility. Due to the Kunker (2023) and Fairmont (2021-23) offerings, this date is now slightly more available in AU grades than the 1858-S or the 1859-S, yet it remains very rare in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and High R-7 in Uncirculated. The single best is the NGC MS62—ex S.S. Republic— in the Tyrant Collection. PCGS shows a single coin in MS60 and it is very heavily abraded.
This is one of the two best of the five or so PCGS AU55 1860-S eagles known; the only one I like better is the Fairmont/ “Hendricks” PCGS/CAC AU55+ that brought $34,800 as Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5269. It shows almost no wear and the natural medium yellow-gold color that is undisturbed. I regard it as the third best 1860-S eagle and no comparable coin is likely to be offered for a loooong time.
Please note that the PCGS population of eight in AU55 and five finer (one each in AU55+, AU58, AU58+ and MS60) is inflated by resubmissions.
This fresh-to-the-market example is among the best 1860-S $10’s I’ve ever offered for sale.
