CHALLENGING PCGS MS61 1865 GOLD DOLLAR

As with its two predecessors—the 1863 and the 1864—this date is a challenging and popular issue which is actually seen in very high grades (MS66 to MS67+) more often than it is in the AU55 to MS62 range. A single PCGS/CAC MS68 gold dollar exists, and it sold for $34,500 back in March 2008.

This medium amber-gold example is lustrous but shows a few grade-limiting scuffs in the fields. There is pronounced die swelling at the upper obverse over the Indian’s head which is pretty cool, if I might say so.

Since Heritage 5/23: 5013 sold for $4,800, there has not been a single PCGS MS61 gold dollar sold at auction.

A scarce and affordable example of this popular Civil War date.
