PCGS AU58 1889-CC
The 1889-CC is the second scarcest CC double eagle from the 1880s after the 1885-CC. It is not often found finer than AU55 to AU58 and many of the coins graded as such are not choice.
This fresh, frosty example is very high-end for the grade with excellent luster and pleasing natural rose and gold color with some darker highlights on the obverse. The surfaces show shallow marks with nothing detracting. The eye appeal is excellent.
The last three PCGS AU58 examples of this date to sell at auction brought $6,900 (2/19), $7,020 (1/19), and $7,920 (12/18).
Before examples of this date in AU58 were located in overseas hoards (early 2018), this date sold at auction for $9,000-11,000.
