COLORFUL 1878 $20 GRADED MS62+ BY PCGS/CAC

The 1878 has a similar rarity profile to the other P+S mint Type Three double eagles made from 1877 through 1882. It is very scarce in MS63 and extremely rare in MS64 and higher. If I were a collector focusing on this series, I would pass on an MS63 example of this date—which is likely to run you around $15,000+ for a nice coin with CAC verification—and instead buy a nice PCGS/CAC MS62+ at a fraction of the price.

You are either going to really like or really dislike the appearance of this fresh, original coin. The obverse shows copper spots in the form of orange-reddish spots that are most prominent at the center while the reverse shows rich (and I think really lovely) reddish-gold color which is most prominent from 7:00 to around 9:00. A few small ticks on the lower right obverse narrowly remove this coin from the 63 level.

Two PCGS/CAC MS62+ 1878 double eagles have sold since 2019, with one bringing $6,000 in 8/2022, and the other selling for $5,760 in 3/2023.

CAC has approved 34 in MS62, which includes a few in MS62+, with 10 finer.
