POPULAR 1905 DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1905 is the scarcest Philadelphia Liberty Head double eagle made after 1892. It is not often seen above MS61 to MS62 grades and seldom in this range with natural color.
This strictly Uncirculated example has the “skin” and luster of a higher grade but it is properly encased in a 61 holder on account of some scattered handling marks on the obverse.
The last PCGS MS61 1905 double eagle with CAC approval to sell at auction realized $4,113 as Heritage 1/14: 7247.
This date becomes expensive in higher grades, making this nice MS61 with CAC approval a smart choice for most Type Three double eagle collectors.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with 12 finer.
