The 1889-CC double eagle has a mintage of 30,945. In addition to being the penultimate CC double eagle from this decade, it is a coin that is harder to locate than some of the other more available issues from this mint. It is usually seen in the EF45 to AU55 grades and it is very scarce in properly graded MS61. In MS62, the 1889-CC is rare and it is very rare in MS63.

This fresh-to-the-market example has never been dipped or messed with as have so many CC double eagles. It shows deep, rich yellow and green gold hues with some darker highlights on the obverse from storage. There are some scuffs in the obverse fields that are consistent with the grade; the reverse is clean and choice with lighter color and very few marks.

The last PCGS MS61 1889-CC with CAC approval to sell at auction was the Heritage 8/10: 6227 coin that brought $13,225. Since then, the market for CC double eagles has improved considerably.

If you collect this series and you are looking for a nice example of the 1889-CC, you would be hard-pressed to find a better example without spending over $20,000.

CAC has approved two in MS61 with three finer than this.
