The 1868 is the scarcest Type Two double eagle from the Philadelphia mint. It is not often seen in affordable collector grades.

This example has a “Euro” appearance with deep orange-gold color. But unlike many coins from overseas sources, it is not overly dirty or stained on the devices. This piece is lustrous for the grade and the surfaces are choice except for a cluster of marks below star five on the obverse.

There have been just five 1868 double eagles in EF45 sold at auction since the middle of 2009. The last one to trade was Heritage 1/13: 7503, graded by PCGS, that sold reasonably at $2,585.
