The 1863-S is common in all circulated grades. It becomes scarce in the lowest Uncirculated grades and it is quite rare in MS62. The finest known is an NGC MS64* which sold at auction for $43,125 in early 2012.

While not mentioned as such by NGC, it seems likely from this coin’s appearance that it is from a shipwreck. The luster is very frosty and has less of a “subdued” look than other Uncirculated examples of this date which I have seen. The color is a pleasing soft rose and orange-gold with deeper orange rings at the borders. The surfaces are amazingly free of marks with just a few small ticks seen on the portrait; the reverse grades at least MS63 to MS64 on its own.

The last MS62 1863-S double eagle to sell at auction was an NGC coin from the S.S. Republic shipwreck which brought $19,975 in August 2012.

If you are a serious collector of Type One double eagles or Civil War gold, you no doubt realize the importance of this impressive 1863-S.

CAC has approved four in this grade with none finer.
