Medium S mintmark.
The 1863-S is the second most available Civil War-era double eagle from this mint after the 1865-S. It is moderately scarce in the higher AU grades but it is not often seen with original color and surfaces.
This medium green-gold and rose example has excellent color and a good amount of mint luster can be seen on the obverse and reverse. The strike is typical for the issue with some flatness on the hair but the reverse is sharper than normally seen. The surfaces are very clean save for a few old scrapes on the face of Liberty and some abrasions in the lower left obverse field.
No AU55 examples of the 1863-S double eagle have sold at auction since 2011. During that year, three different PCGS coins brought $3,738 while a single NGC coin realized $3,220.
A good value and a pleasing coin for the grade.
